Prosper sets three (3) Water Conservation Seminars

The June 1 enactment of Stage 3 water restrictions in the Prosper community means that lawns may get fewer soakings through irrigation systems, but it does not mean that lawns necessarily have to become distressed, according to Angela Tucker, Water Conservation Coordinator.
“While watering of lawns and landscaping will be limited to once a week under Stage 3, there are other strategies that homeowners can take to lessen the impact on their lawns, shrubs and trees,” she said.
Chief among those strategies is attending a series of free seminars being presented by the Town’s Public Works Dept., and implementing the techniques presented. The Town is partnering with Agri-Life of Texas A&M in presenting the seminars. All of the seminars will take place at the pavilion at Frontier Park on the Town’s north end.

The first of the three seminars set for this summer is scheduled for Monday, June 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., entitled “Sprinkler System Basics.” In this seminar, experts in irrigation systems will go over the operation of a properly running system and share tips on how to best utilize it. Making repairs, aligning sprinkler heads, setting the timer, adjusting the controller and the benefits of drip irrigation will be covered. A question and answer session will conclude the seminar.

Then, on Monday July 15, a seminar on lawn care maintenance will be presented. Again, the location is the pavilion at Frontier Park, and the seminar runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In this presentation, questions regarding the proper mowing of lawns, the amount of water required for a healthy lawn, the methods of encouraging a deep root system for grasses, and which lawn grasses are better suited for this area will be covered. As before, a question and answer session will end the seminar.

And, finally, on Monday August 5, residents can learn how to harvest rain for irrigation. Experts in this area will cover the basics of placing a capture barrel in the most advantageous place for harvesting rain, and then, how to configure the barrel to irrigate the landscape. The seminar will be held at the pavilion at Frontier Park and will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
